Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Abdel-Aziz Konsowa and Minister of Youth and Sports Gowhar Nabil discussed on Monday, May 25, 2026, means of supporting and developing the university sports system as well as enhancing the participation of university students in various sports activities and tournaments.
The talks also addressed the preparations for Egypt’s hosting of the 12th edition of the African University Games “Cairo 2026,” which Egypt will host during the period from August 9 to 16. Konsowa stressed that the ministry attaches great importance to supporting sports activities within universities as one of the key pillars for building well-rounded student personalities and promoting a spirit of belonging and teamwork.
He underlined the ministry’s keenness on encouraging university students to engage in various sports activities, in addition to expanding student participation in sports events and competitions across public, private, national and technological universities nationwide.
The minister noted that universities have historically served as a source for discovering and nurturing talents in sports, arts, culture and science. He emphasized that universities provide a supportive environment for innovators and gifted students and contribute to preparing generations capable of achieving excellence and innovation in various fields.
He also highlighted the ministry’s support for athletically talented students by offering incentives, facilities and scholarships that help them balance their academic and athletic careers through an integrated system of rewards and grants. For his part, Nabil affirmed that the state places great importance on building the Egyptian individual, which is reflected in the ongoing coordination and cooperation among ministries and institutions concerned with youth affairs.
He stressed the importance of integration between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Higher Education to achieve the state’s goals of preparing a generation capable of leadership, creativity and competition in various fields. Nabil said that Egyptian universities represent a major base for discovering athletic talents in different sports, noting that this requires constant joint efforts that aim at expanding sports participation and providing the appropriate environment to develop and qualify talents in the best possible way.
The meeting also reviewed the latest developments regarding a number of upcoming championships and events, as well as several joint files related to developing the sports and youth system. They highlighted the advanced organizational and construction capabilities of Egyptian universities, which reflect the country’s ability to host continental and international events according to the highest standards.
