Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty commended the partnership between Egypt and the European Investment Bank (EIB), especially as Egypt is the bank's largest country of operations outside the European Union.
The Minister made the comments on Monday, June 15, 2026, during a meeting with EIB President Nadia Calviño at the bank's headquarters in Luxembourg. Abdelatty underscored the importance Egypt attaches to its strategic and comprehensive partnership with the European Union, saying that the EIB represents a key pillar in supporting such partnership at both the development and investment levels.
The Minister reaffirmed the Egyptian government's commitment to continuing the implementation of its economic and structural reform program, which is aimed at improving the investment climate and strengthening the resilience of the Egyptian economy in the face of current regional and international challenges.
He also underlined the significance of the "Egypt Food Resilience" project financed through the bank's investments, describing it as a significant contribution to enhancing Egypt's ability to address global supply chain challenges. Abdelatty praised the bank's role in financing infrastructure projects, particularly in the transport, water and sanitation sectors.
He pointed to its pivotal contribution to supporting and implementing the nexus of Water, Food and Energy (NWFE) program, which is one of Egypt's leading national platforms that promotes the nexus between water, food and energy and helps mobilize concessional financing, while supporting the transition to a green economy.
The Minister also stressed the importance of maximizing the benefits of the EIB's regional hub in Cairo and the role it plays in supporting regional cooperation. He expressed hope for stronger collaboration in the coming period in areas including green transition projects and financing for healthcare and housing projects.
Abdelatty, Calviño and the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean witnessed the signing of a government agreement for a project to upgrade Egypt's electricity network, as well as an agreement for a multi-vaccine production plant project for VACSERA. The vaccine project marks the first cooperation project between Egypt and the EIB in the healthcare sector.
