Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met with UAE renewable energy company Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi to review progress on solar, wind and battery storage projects in Egypt. During the talks, they discussed accelerating construction and connecting new renewable energy capacity to Egypt’s national electricity grid, according to the Electricity Ministry.

Esmat reviewed progress on a 200 MW wind power project in the Gulf of Suez, scheduled to be connected to the national grid in December next year. The meeting also addressed projects involving the Infinity-Hassan Allam consortium, including a 1,000 MW wind farm in Ras Shukeir and a 1,000 MW solar power project in Minya, together with 600 MWh of battery storage.

A separate 200 MW solar project in Benban, supported by 120 MWh of battery storage, is scheduled for connection to the grid by the end of this year. Esmat said that Egypt plans to continue adding renewable generation and battery storage capacity to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and support the stability of the electricity grid.

Under its national energy strategy, Egypt aims to raise renewable energy’s share of its electricity mix to 45% by 2028, with private-sector investment playing a major role in developing new capacity.
