Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held talks with Russia’s Rosatom on Saturday, September 26, 2026, on preparations to receive nuclear fuel for Egypt’s El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in 2027. Esmat met Andrey Petrov, First Deputy Director General of Rosatom and Head of Atomstroyexport, the company implementing the El-Dabaa project, at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Capital.
Nuclear Power Plants Authority Chairman Sherif Helmy attended the meeting. The talks also reviewed progress on the construction of the nuclear plant and preparations required before the nuclear fuel arrives next year. The two sides discussed work at different stages of the project against the agreed timetable.
They also reviewed preparations to connect electricity generated by El-Dabaa to Egypt’s national grid. During the talks, they addressed the manufacturing of equipment for the plant, including electricity-generating turbines for its reactors. Egyptian and Russian officials also discussed expanding training programs for personnel who will operate the plant.
Esmat said that the project is proceeding according to its planned schedule, with Egyptian and Russian teams continuing to coordinate work at the site. He added that nuclear power is part of Egypt’s national energy strategy, which seeks to diversify electricity generation, reduce the use of fossil fuels and meet growing demand for electricity.
Additionally, the Minister said that authorities would continue to monitor progress at El-Dabaa through the remaining stages of construction and preparations for connecting the plant to the national grid.
