Egypt continued its active participation in the 137th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, held at the organization’s headquarters in London. The Egyptian delegation, headed by the Deputy Minister of Transport for Maritime Transport and including Egypt's Permanent Representative to the IMO, took part to reaffirm Egypt’s commitment to supporting the organization's work and developing the international maritime transport system.
The Ministry of Transport stated in a press release today that the Egyptian delegation participated in discussions on various agenda items, delivering interventions that stressed the importance of transparency, fair geographical representation within the Secretariat, human resources development, and multilingualism to ensure inclusive participation for all member states.
The delegation also delivered an intervention affirming Egypt’s full support for Qatar to host the World Maritime Day parallel event in 2028. During the upcoming meetings, the Council is scheduled to discuss two working papers submitted by Egypt to contribute to the development of the organization's operations.
The first paper addresses enhancing the accessibility of the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS) by supporting the Arabic language, while the second focuses on protecting international shipping lanes to enhance maritime security and ensure the continuity of global trade and supply chains under current challenges.
This active participation reflects Egypt's standing within the IMO and its keenness to contribute effectively to shaping international maritime policies and providing practical visions that support the security and sustainability of regional and international navigation.
