Egypt chairs 1st IOSCO emerging markets meeting in 2026

Chairman of Egypt’s Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) Islam Azzam chaired on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the first virtual meeting in 2026 of the Growth and Emerging Markets Committee (GEMC) of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).

Chairman of Egypt’s Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) Islam Azzam chaired on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the first virtual meeting in 2026 of the Growth and Emerging Markets Committee (GEMC) of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). The meeting was attended by regulators and capital market representatives from emerging and developing economies to discuss market development, financial stability and international regulatory cooperation.

The committee represents more than 75 % of IOSCO members and includes 90 members and 24 affiliate members, including several G20 economies. During the meeting, Azzam said that the committee plays an important role in supporting emerging markets through regulatory cooperation, exchange of expertise and capacity-building programs.

They also discussed global market developments, debt market challenges, financial technology, artificial intelligence, digital assets and regulatory risks facing emerging economies. Additionally, the meeting participants reviewed ways of improving supervision tools, increasing market transparency and developing flexible regulatory frameworks to keep pace with rapid financial and technological changes.

Azzam stressed the importance of international cooperation among regulators to support capital market development and strengthen financial stability.
