The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced a significant surge in wheat deliveries for the current season, with volumes delivered so far exceeding 3.2 million tons, reaching 64% of the total target. The increase is attributed to the implementation of an integrated system of facilitation measures and financial incentives introduced by the state to support Egyptian farmers.
Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk said in a statement on Sunday, May 17, 2026, that Egypt places wheat at the top of its priorities as a key pillar of national food security, given its strategic importance in food industries, particularly bread.
He noted that the cultivated area this year reached 3.7 million feddans for the first time, an increase of 600,000 feddans compared to last year. He added that the state aims to procure 5 million tons of local wheat from farmers this season, highlighting the state’s support for farmers through directives from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to raise the procurement price to 2,500 Egyptian pounds per ardeb, ensuring profitable returns and encouraging higher delivery rates.
He emphasized that farmers are a key partner in development and the first line of defense for food security. Farouk also said that there is close and ongoing coordination between the Ministries of Agriculture and Supply to facilitate delivery procedures, with more than 400 collection and receiving points nationwide to reduce distances and ease the burden on farmers.
